The thing is that I was possibly thinking about. What is the value of a colt 45 model of 1911 US Army with serial number 565204?
Hello everyone.I am in 'negotiations' with a guy to trade my AR for his Colt pistol. I have never owned a Colt 1911 before, and I'm hoping you all can get me up to speed fairly quick. The pistol in question is a Mk IV, Series 80 Officers model.
The serial number ends in an 'E' which Colt Customer Service tells me indicates the pistol came from the Colt Custom Shop. The serial number itself is in the high 11,000 range. Can any of you give me an idea of what I may be looking at (in regards to the 'custom' part) and what sort of issues I should be aware of?Thanks very much!
I just bought an Colt officers ACP as you described. I would say mine is 85-90% condition. I got it for 625 shipped with 4 wilson combat mags.It is definately an enhanced version.

That means the top of the slide is flat not round. The slide serations are angled towards the front. The ejection port id lowered for reliability. The frame is cut under the trigger guard so you get a higher grip. I think that is it to make it enhanced.
Some people say the enhanced versions are finicky. Mine is a great shooter. The thing you have to watch for with these pistols are the home gunsmiths who butcher them. The recoil plug needs to be changed. This is why colt discontinued these guns. It is an easy fix.
I got a reverse recoil plug from clarks custom guns. It was 25 delivered and it is drop in. No modification to the firearm. Many guys want to fit a whole new recoil system and they butcher the pistol. You are better off with an original condition gun then one attempted to modify the weapon. Dont let anyone tell you these guns are bad. They are one of the best carry 45's out there. With a 25 dollar part the gun is perfect.I carry mine all the time.
One more thing change the recoil spring to a single spring made by wolf. I am running a 20 or 22 pound spring. The spring is 7 bucks. It's an RRA, but it's a homebuild.
Cost me maybe $600 in parts. I'm including an EOTech, Matech BUIS and 10 Okay 30-rd mags. I think my total expenditure was a hair over $1K I am trying to sell it on Gunbroker right now, but should that fall through, I'm considering getting this pistol and $200 cash from the guy.
I made the mistake of using Gunbroker, GunsAmerica, etc. As a basis for judging the worth of the pistol and used $800 as my reference.
Hey, it's stainless steel, I'd judge (from the pics) it to be in 99% condition (it's had 20 rounds put through it according to the owner) and 'enhanced'!! LOLThe plug I think I can manage, but not so sure about replacing springs. Hello everyone.I am in 'negotiations' with a guy to trade my AR for his Colt pistol. Can any of you give me an idea of what I may be looking at (in regards to the 'custom' part) and what sort of issues I should be aware of?Thanks very much!AllenInWV,Keep your AR!!!! They're plenty of Colts still out there in West Virgina. Save your money and buy a new one, keep your AR. Out here in California Colts are virtually non existant but plenty everywhere else.
The 'fficers' modelin question is one of the enhansed models of late era. No big deal just fancy looking. You can buy another and make it looks just as nice or better in time.rimfire,22. Well, no need to worry about me butchering anything. Two things I will definitely do (if I go through with the trade) is new sights (installed by Novak) and that recoil plug.
I MIGHT see about a new mainspring, housing, and a new grip safety with a 'speed bump' on it.Regarding the valuation of guns.as Larry and others have said, the AR is apparently 'more gun' than the OACP (which I disagree with, but more on that later). They says the value of the OACP is around $600. Yet a quick search on Gunbroker and Gunsamerica doesn't bear that out. In fact, I see most of the stainless versions hovering around $850.
The few that ARE at $600 or lower are listed at 80% condition, or have been 'worked on'. And those numbers DON'T include S/H and transfer fees. Am I not looking in the right places? As far as the AR goes.it's a 'Walter Mitty' gun for me. For fending of hordes of bird-flu ravaged marauders and the like. I put maybe $600 into the rifle, another $300 into the EOTech and $100 into the mags. Based on the auction sites I've been to, all that in exchange for a LNIB Colt and $200 seems okay to me. What am I missing?

I bought my MKIV OACP in the mid $400 range. My shooting partner got his for less than mine. If your happy with the gun trade, then put the $200 in to sights and parts. LOL Like the AR Rimfire?
I do like it, but it's just sitting there. I'm getting ready to move to the 'burbs and I just don't have a place for it in the new house. A good pistol would be more practical for me. YMMVAllenInWV,Keep it anyway!
Just don't tell anyone. In this day and age one can never tell what will happen in the future. I keep my AR's in the closet and I live in sunny California that's so antigun, rifle.
Believe me dude I've lived through 3 big earthquakes in my current lifetime and 2 major riots that I can think of. Believe me when I say if the police can't help you then you have to handle things on your own until order is restored. KEEP THAT AR FOR A RAINY DAY. Save your money and buy a pistol as you side arm separately. To rely on a pistol for defense only is foolish in my opinion.rimfire,22. Pyunker45I stand corrected. Absolutly no one butchers their 45's playing gunsmith.Sir, I really dont want a flame war with you.
However, when someone makes a large blanket statement such as yours, I will take exception to it. Qualify your blanket statment and give specifics on just how many guys you have seen install a whole new recoil system and butcher the pistol. I would be very interested in the details of the butchering done as I like to read and learn on this forum. I saw your post of 3-13-05 asking for information on ACPs as you were interested in purchasing one. My question is.in 7 months, how many butchered ACPs have you seen that resulted from the installation of a new recoil system?
Pyunker45I want to clarify something here and then end this because it is a pissing contest. I have not seen many OACP's in the stores to inspect them first hand. I have read here on this site of a person filing to much off their slide and then having to get a custom reverse plug made.
Maybe the word many was a little much. But aside from the OACP I have seen butchered 1911's. The 1911 is one of the most common gun to be tinkered with and people love to play gunsmith and butcher them.
Even if I was way off in my so called blanket statement. I was just trying to point him in a place to look and beware of possible butchering of a firearm. The OACP needs the recoil system modified so if not done properly it could be a problem. I never said his gun was butchered I just told him to beware of the possibility of it being butcherd. When I needed help with my purchase I got it here and all I was doing is pass on what I learned to him. You came along and wanted to drill me to the ground because of a so called blanket statement. You didnt want to add constructive help on this thread you wanted a flame war.
I appreciate all the help I got from the guys on this board but I dont appreciate the trouble you want to start with this thread. I am done replying to this. The 'high thumb' shooting grip isn't primarily about keeping the thumb high, it's about keeping your thumb on top of the thumb safety so you know it's off. If you always place your thumb on top of the thumb safety you can get it off quickly when needed. In addition I routinely see folks safe these pistols during normal shooting with their thumb under the safety and they bump it up.The Gunsite Low Thumb Safety lets you assume a more 'natural thumb' position without an exaggerated high thumb sticking up there. It lowers that part of your thumb a good 1/2 inch and the tip of the thumb much, much more.
I have this on 3 of my pistols at present.Recommend you try one, they're habit forming. No more difficult to fit than any other thumb safety. Weekend exercises or training are much easier for me with this thumb safety and I can work the standard version just as easily, but not as comfortably.Compare the OFF position below to where your lever is and you can approximate the thumb position with your existing pistol - about where you'd naturally hold it.I tried the Kings drop in grip safety, but found it too cumbersome for this size pistol when carrying it.- Chuck.
