“ The best multiplayer game of 2000, bar none. ”―Game Revolution This article is about the first game in the Counter-Strike series.

For the video game series, see.Counter-Strike (also marketed as Half-Life: Counter-Strike) is a multiplayer first-person shooter initially created by and as a mod for. By the fifth beta, started actively participating in the development and ultimately bought the rights to the game and offered the original developers jobs at the company which both of them accepted. After about a year in, the first full release of the mod was published on November 9, 2000 and the game was also available at retailers in North America shortly thereafter, on November 14, 2000.Since the creation of the franchise, various sequels and spinoffs have been created, such as, and the latest in the series,. Main article:The fast-paced and team-oriented gameplay of Counter-Strike has stayed relatively the same throughout the years. In it, two teams, the and the, fight to complete an objective or eliminate the opposing team.

Although basic, it is considered one of the most revolutionary online games of all time. The original Counter-Strike came exclusively with multiplayer, without computer-controlled players. Over time, however, several server-side modifications have added bots for in-game use and bots were officially introduced in its later successors, Counter-Strike (Xbox) and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.Game modesCounter-Strike has been praised worldwide for its highly competitive multiplayer. The decision to make the game multiplayer only roots back to its mod origins. Doing a single-player game would have entailed much more work as new models and AI code would have been needed for enemies as opposed to a multiplayer game which requires considerably less work. There are three official scenarios, each with their own teams, objectives, and maps. In all cases, the two are the face off against the.In the original retail release, a short single-player only was included but this was removed when the game was transferred to Steam.ScenariosThere are three official scenarios in Counter-Strike:,.

Main article:This scenario is the least popular of the three and only a single map, is featured in the latest release of the game. In this scenario a single player on the Counter-Terrorist team takes the role of a that must make it to a.

Some maps feature only one escape zone while others feature multiple escape zones. The Terrorists have to take out the VIP and successfully eliminating the VIP will yield victory to the Terrorists. Both teams have a restricted arsenal of weapons available for purchase. Like in other scenarios, victory can also be attained by eliminating the opposing team.MapsCounter-Strike features a large variety of maps that take place in different environments including urban, arctic, jungle and desert settings. During the post-beta stages, maps were still rotated in the official distribution on a slightly smaller scale. Since the release of Counter-Strike 1.6, no maps have been added or removed from the game.It should be noted that the majority of maps for the game were created by people that were originally simply hobbyist mappers. When later bought the rights to Counter-Strike and its content these became the first works published at retail for many of the level designers.

The weapons for Counter-Strike were chosen mainly based on two criteria. For one, the weapons had to be satisfying to use and they had to look and sound cool. The other criteria was realism and what weapons the factions would likely be using in real-life. The former of these criteria was given more weight than ensuring authenticity.Inspiration for potential weapon candidates were taken from various movies.

Further inspiration was also taken from the movies and. Most of the information regarding the weapons themselves was sourced from the internet or from gun magazines. Because limited information was available regarding some of the weapons, had to guess how some weapons could have functioned when animating them and thus a few weapon models exhibit differences when compared to their real-world counterparts.Counter-Strike notably features left-handed weapon view models. These models were made as left-handed because the creator of these models and the main man behind Counter-Strike, is left-handed and thus preferred animating the weapons from that side. The game features a possibility of changing the models to right-handed, but as the models are simply mirrored from their left-handed counterparts they sport some inaccuracies when compared to their real-world counterparts.List of weaponsCounter-Strike features a total of 25, some of which are exclusive to the and others which are exclusive to the.

+ote=student working on this for the past few months. This is an amazing piece of work! You've done what I had been doing in the past but got frustrated. Too many CSO (now CSN:Z) maps to fix for AI bots, too many.aiw fine-tuning and too many overviews to create from scratch. I can only thank you.Do you have any plans to keep adding maps to this? Like, for example, the three zmabyss maps (converted to dm like I privately did a lot of time ago), dmunion or even the CS Beta maps? It would be awesome, but I understand that it could be a hell and very time consuming. You even fixed the black texture issue in decanalcz!

This map still has a little bug that I think it can't be fixed (bullets 'impact' on the air shooting under the bombsite's bridge) or you can get stuck in the air if you jump on the right side of the ramp near CT's base (right path) at csarcticbiolabcz even though nothing's there.Again, thank you. Thanks for the reply!;) The Counter-Strike Online.nav files are indeed pretty worthless, but for now I've used the official overviews for all of the maps (except for dedazzling and detoscana where I made minor modifications) even though some of them have apparent problems. The CZ and CS retail overviews are created from scratch though.

My plans are that for version 1.00 of the pack I'd replace the CSO ones with apparent problems with proper ones created from scratch.I have no plans to actually convert maps from different game modes to ones supported by the original Counter-Strike/Condition Zero. Checkmate was a special case since it seems like it was actually originally meant to be a simple dm/annihilation map but this was changed later on (some places still call it dmcheckmate).

Besides the map is pretty much identical in both directions so it was a perfect fit for annihilation mode. But regarding the zombie maps, considering that CSN:Z is also available by now I don't think it's that needed anymore either. (And I've not been playing the unofficial zombie mods enough to know how to make maps compatible with those.)dmunion is actually included so I don't quite see what you mean, unless you mean converting it to a defusal map which I've seen available in some places.

But since I'm no professional mapper I really don't know if such changes would result in a balanced map. And it doesn't seem like it was ever meant to be a defusal map anyway even though the layout in general is quite a good fit.I have actually made a private update where I have updated the maps that have since been officially updated (deturkey and dedust0) and added a new compatible map (fyiceworld) but I haven't yet released it. I've been made aware of the fact that destorm was actually updated by the author (released as destorm2) but for some reason never officially put into circulation and I'm planning on having that map also included in the next update. My plans are actually to finish this minor update by the end of the month. The readme actually mentions plans of including all the beta maps but honestly it is a monsterous task and thus far I've only finished 2 of the 24 maps that I've planned to include so it is quite far from being released. My plans are still to eventually finish it, but I have no idea how long it might take. Not to mention that the bots have serious problems with some of the maps.As for the bugs you've mentioned in the beta CZ maps, the fact that the black texture thing was fixable in decanal was just a pure strike of luck.

I don't know how well versed you are in the map format, but usually such changes would require decompiling of the actual map but in this case it seems like they had actually tried to set the texture as transparent but just used the wrong value. Had it not been done, the map would have been needed to be decompiled to fix the issue.

I'm sure you have tried the leaked version of debridge, and in that map these transparency issues are not fixable without actually decompling the map (not to mention there are plenty of more issues that would be needed to be fixed, so decompiling would be necessary anyway).I'm aware of the bug with the bridge in decanal, but unfortunately it wouldn't be fixable without decompiling the map. There are a few other oddtites with the map that would also require decompilation to fix (e.g. There is one vertex/polygon/side missing from the signs that display the canal logo resulting in them having kind of a hole in them). The bug in csarcticbiolab sounds similar though I haven't personally noticed it.

I don't think decompiling the maps would be worth it in these cases (since it would likely cause more additional bugs than fixing the few smaller issues). Debridge is another case entirely and decompiling it would be required to make in anywhere near what I'd consider a playable state. As a side note, I've tried to make contact with authors of CZ maps that were designed during its development but never released/leaked.

Alas, I've had no luck yet getting any of them to release anything:(. The main problem seems to lie in the fact that Gearbox Software owns the rights to these maps. Updated the pack to v0.76. +uote=LitudeBeen working on this for the past few months. Updated to version 0.80.

Version 0.90 is finally here.
